Led by second-year point guard Ty Lawson, the Denver Nuggets made a strong showing at the 2010 NBA Summer League in Las Vegas.

Lawson averaged 16.4 points and 5.0 assists as the Nuggets went 4-1 for the third straight summer. Coby Karl was second on the team in scoring (14.0 ppg) and rebounding (6.3 rpg) before missing the final game to attend the ESPYs, where George Karl was presented with the Jimmy V Award for perseverance.

Coached by assistant coach Jamahl Mosley, the Nuggets won their first four games by an average 18.5 points before falling to the Houston Rockets by seven points in their summer finale.

“At dinner the first night, I talked to them about what we wanted to accomplish,” Mosley said. “The next day, they got to work. I can’t stress how impressed and how happy I am from the standpoint of playing basketball the right way.”

Other players of note on Denver’s 11-man roster included former University of Colorado guard Richard Roby, who is the half-brother of Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin, and center Brian Butch, the reigning MVP of the NBA Development League All-Star Game.

Roby got off to a strong start, scoring 16 points in the first game, but he went 6-for-27 from the field in the final four games and didn’t reach double figures.

Butch was hoping to make a strong impression in Las Vegas, but he ruptured his left patella tendon in the second game and returned to Denver for surgery.

Taking advantage of an opportunity to play, big men Othello Hunter (12.8 ppg, 6.4 rpg) and Shane Edwards (10.8, 4.2) did their best to impressed the NBA scouts and executives Their performance could lead to an invitation to training camp this fall.

“I told them we’d love to have all of them,” Mosley said. “They were willing to run through a wall. That was the big key. They were willing to run through a wall for each other and the coaching staff.”
